A luxury yacht named Bayesian, carrying 22 people and anchored off the port of Porticello, was struck by a violent storm, resulting in the tragic sinking of the vessel. One person on board lost their life, and six individuals, including British tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch and his daughter, are still missing. Among the missing passengers were Jonathan Bloomer, chairman of Morgan Stanley International and Chris Morvillo, a lawyer at Clifford Chance. The fear is that the bodies of the missing individuals may have been trapped inside the sunken yacht.
Specialist divers were able to reach the sunken ship at a depth of approximately 50 meters, but their access was limited due to obstacles in the way. Fifteen people managed to escape before the yacht went down, including Lynch’s wife, Angela Bacares, and a one-year-old girl. The body of the yacht’s onboard chef, identified as Antiguan citizen Ricardo Thomas, was recovered following the tragic incident. Prosecutors have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the sinking of the Bayesian in the town of Termini Imerese.
The incident occurred amidst storms and heavy rainfall in Italy, triggered by scorching heat in the preceding weeks that had elevated the temperature of the Mediterranean sea to record levels. Meteorologist Luca Mercalli highlighted the sea surface temperature around Sicily was notably higher than normal, creating favorable conditions for intense storms. While it cannot be definitively attributed to global warming, it certainly plays a role in exacerbating such extreme weather events.
The British government’s Marine Accident Investigation Branch dispatched a team of inspectors to Sicily to conduct a preliminary assessment of the situation. Experts at the scene are focusing on key factors such as whether the yacht’s crew had enough time to secure access hatches before the storm struck. The tragedy serves as a stark reminder of the risks associated with maritime travel, particularly during unpredictable weather conditions.
